From master of horror Dario Argento (Suspiria, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) comes Phenomena - one of his most eccentric and unique thrillers, featuring telepathic insects, maggots galore, and even a razor-wielding chimp!
Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly, Labyrinth), daughter of a world-renowned movie star, arrives in the so-called "Swiss Transylvania" to attend an exclusive girls' school. However, a vicious killer is targeting the pupils, and sleepwalker Jennifer finds herself in the assassin's headlights when her nocturnal wanderings cause her to witness the death of a fellow pupil. Aided by paraplegic entomologist John McGregor (Donald Pleasence, Halloween) and her own uncanny ability to communicate telepathically with insects, Jennifer sets out to track down the killer before she herself becomes the latest victim...
Released in 1985, towards the end of Argento's decade-long golden age as a director, Phenomena co-stars Dalila Di Lazarro (The Pyjama Girl Case), Patrick Bauchau (Clear and Present Danger) and Daria Nicolodi (Tenebrae), and features lush cinematography by Romano Albani (Inferno) and a pounding prog rock score by Goblin (Deep Red, Suspiria). Presenting the original Italian version in a sumptuous 4K restoration.

Gorgeous
Like with their other argentos the presentation is absolutely stunning. I wouldn't recommend to start with this one if you're new to Argento though. If you have seen others and enjoyed them this is a great buy

Great image quality, great extras
Great upgrade from the blu-ray, comes with the extended cut only which is a shame but no big deal. Great picture quality, strong colors and a nice soft grain. The feature-length documentary extra is a nice inclusion.

Truly Amazing Video Quality
I've always had a soft spot for this odd mixture of crime fiction, eighties horror and YA fantasy. It shouldn't work but this is just irresistible. This 4K disc manages to somehow best the already beautiful previous edition. The cinematography and art direction really shine in this transfer, and the extra material is as usual plentiful. Argento fans have been really blessed in this 4K era !

Good quality, extras missing from older release?
Might be incorrect but looks like it doesn't have the extras that were on the 2011 release, I'm assuming the new feature length doc has most of the same stuff but I don't have any clear info on this. Picture quality is very good, no qualms there. Would have liked to see the international cut included but it's no big deal.

Must Buy in 4K
Phenomena is a unique horror/thriller which I can't help but enjoy more and more every time I watch it. Italian director Dario Argento's signature insanity is displayed here with a lightning pace coupled with frantic plot devices to keep the viewer constantly questioning and deciphering the horror of a serial killer hunting young girls. This film does not hold back either, proudly presenting maggot-infested heads and insects galore. The cast (Jennifer Connolly and Donald Pleasence) are GREAT and work together wonderfully as a "gifted" student and mentor combo. Oh, and let's not forget the lovable Chimpanzee companion... However, sometimes the acting of Jennifer's peers can be... poor. Though, to cringe at a couple of scenes of abysmal "acting" is a small price to pay for what this film has to offer on the whole. The cinematography matches the film's supernatural allure with both long and instantaneous shots capturing the scene's mood. The score is, I will admit, questionable at times with rock music playing during slower and more intense sequences. Though, I can overlook this due to the other tracks perfectly oozing dark wonder. So, whilst the piece isn't objectively "perfect" with some questionable narrative and directorial decisions, I think Phenomena has great rewatchability and a distinctly chilling vibe that few films achieve to pull off. Without spoiling, the ending is absolute chaos. Argento goes off the f***ing rails and I love every second of it. The picture quality is some of the best I've seen on an older film, with colours especially benefiting from the restoration. If you want to watch this film in its full glory, I implore the reader to ensure they experience it in its restored 4K form by Arrow Video.
