Definitive edition of a horror classic

This is my favourite Argento movie and it has never looked so good ! Frankly amazing what the 4K UHD format can achieve. The bonus section is more than plentiful too. All-around terrific edition.

Essentially Giallo

"The music is the mise en scene of the crime". A killer motivated by a nursery rhyme, a protagonist who is a jazz pianist, Golbin providing the funky prog rock score. A Giallo whodunnit where the clues don't make a lot of sense, but has memorable set pieces and music. More cool than it is clever. 4K UHD of this, which was gorgeous and colourful as you would expect. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include the 90 minute international export version of the film. It is only the 2 hours extended/original version. You expect the disc to contain both versions, for preservation sake. This release doesn't replace my regular Blu ray copy that has both versions of the film. I quite like the 90 minute version as it is more punchy and to the point. The 2 hour version is a bit long, and the story is a bit disjointed and littered with humorous scenes, and a romance subplot with Daria Nicolodi's character (who is amazing and cute as hell in it). It's a controversial opinion maybe, but I think the film benefits from the removal of these scenes, offering a more concise story and consistent tone. Though the swerves into humour and romance in the extended version do fit with the jazzy syncopated rhythm of the film, adding to its dreamlike funky charm. I am torn at which version I prefer. It's perhaps not helped by all the extended footage only being available in Italian, meaning you can't watch it with the English dub without frequent shifts into Italian whenever you hit a scene from the extended version. It makes the extra material stick out as even more odd (though this is less of an issue if you are watching the whole movie in Italian, as it would be seamless).

A perfect set!

Dario Argento's 1975 'Profundo Rosso' is a Giallo film with small elements of the supernatural. The change was welcomed and, thankfully, this led to 'Suspiria'; a supernatural film with small Giallo elements. This UHD is about as good as picture and sound get. Very fine grain, the reds pop, especially as most of the film is deliberately neutral in colour, just to highlight red when it's used, and detail that was missed when I saw it on DVD and was obscured completely on VHS, such as Marcus' shirt and Helga's dress now showing a pattern. Ironic as dress and colour play a big part in the film; Daly and Carlo are opposite characters, so they wear opposite clothing (Daly: white suit, black shirt; Carlo: black suit, white shirt). This particular set is, as one would expect from Arrow, packed with special features, interviews and an audio commentary from the eber reliable Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson. A solid 5/5 for this, as I am Mr. Picky when it comes to what should be included in a set like this, but I can't think of anything else you would need in there... pretty much perfect!

Good Movie, No complete English dubb

Movie looked sharp and crisp and colours good too. Only thing I didn't like was how it wasn't completely in English, instead it was a mix of English and Italian, not sure why no complete English dubb wasn't included. David Hemmings goes from speaking English to a dubbed Italian voice, didn't like that. I don't like reading subtitles.
