Arrow Films
A relentless one-of-a-kind sensory assault chock-full of hyper-kinetic fight scenes, gangster shootouts, sword-slashing violence and gory zombie horror, Versus was a key title amongst the barrage of innovative horror and action movies that appeared as if from nowhere from Japan at the turn of the millennium, leading to a new wave of appreciation for Asian extreme cinema.
A mysterious face-off in a wooded clearing between two escaped convicts and a carload of sharply dressed yakuza holding a beautiful woman captive ends in hails of bullets and showers of blood. The location for this violent encounter is the mythic Forest of Resurrection, the site of the 444th portal of the 666 hidden gates that link this earthly domain to the netherworld – and it didn't get this name for nothing. As one of the surviving prisoners escapes with the girl into the darkness of the forest, disgruntled gangsters soon become the least of their worries as an earlier battle between a lone warrior against hordes of zombie samurai is carried over from a millennium ago into the present day…
Versus caused a sensation both in Japan and internationally upon its release, launching the careers of director Ryûhei Kitamura (Godzilla Final Wars, Midnight Meat Train) and action star and fight choreographer Tak Sakaguchi (Battlefield Baseball, Yakuza Weapon). Arrow Films is proud to present this mythic cult title in both its original 2000 and expanded 2004 Ultimate Versus iterations, in a brand new, director-approved restoration.

A presentation piece for sure!
Overview : Versus itself is a sensory overload of action, gore and hilariously choreographed action sequences that I highly recommend and is deserving of its cult following. Don't expect an Oscar winning story here, the film is all about the set pieces. However, I would like to review this particular release itself. Presentation : Versus has never looked nor sounded better than in this Arrow Release. Having owned the DVD for several years, the difference is outstanding. The new director approved 2k scan of the original negative is truly remarkable when compared to the DVD. The film is not known for its picture quality, but this is the best it has ever looked in any release. Furthermore, the option of 5.1 (6.1 for the Ultimate Cut) and 2.0 stereo sound options are a real treat and sound outstanding on any decent home cinema system. Rest assured this is the definitive version of the movie to own, no question. Special Features : The release comes with 2 discs with two versions of the film, the standard 2000, 120minute theatrical and the 2004, 131 minute Ultimate cut with previously unreleased footage as well as a short featurette on the new footage. The standard cut disc contains audio commentary from the director and producer along with a visual essay and a two-part behind the scenes documentary. So there is a lot to get into beyond the film itself. Verdict : Overall this is the definitive edition of a classic, low-budget Japanese release. Packed to the brim with special features and two cuts of the movie in glorious 1080p HD. Versus by Arrow Video is a must own for collectors and movie fans alike.
