Clearly a female version of Lustig's Maniac

As with many genre films these days, the first five minutes set the tone: what begins as a friendly and intimate conversation at the hairdresser's suddenly becomes... quite gruesome! The film then focuses much more on character interaction (or solitary scene, the protagonist being quite a loner) than on shocking scene, but up the ante with each following one. As my title claims, the plot looks like a female version of Maniac, considering what the character feels the urge to collect, but the (female) director traded gritty pictures for lush cinematography, the way Suspiria did, using very bright clashing colours, which pleases the eye constantly. Stylistically, Last Night in Soho or The Neon Demon are more recent examples of this style, which I particularly enjoy. If you are sensitive to colours, you are in for a treat! Congrats to the leading actress as well - Najarra Townsend's acting is very subtle and quite varied. You can feel this was first a shorty, because some scenes feel a little bit like padding, but on the bright side, director Jill Gevargizian did not use them to "overexplain" the reasons for her heroin's behaviour. All in all, a very well made horror film.

Really worth your time

I loved this film right from the opening scene. Definitely recommend it for fans of slower, more character-focused slashers (like Lucky McKee's May from 2002). Arrow's commissioned cover artwork looks really cool. I also enjoyed the extensive and genuinely worthwhile supplementary features.
