THERE'S A NEW REASON TO BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.
A sci-fi/horror sleeper hit that birthed a franchise and launched the career of a new action movie icon, Pitch Black holds its own today as a nerve-shredding creature-feature in which the monsters outside finally meet their match against a monster within.
When an intergalactic transport ship crashes on a remote desert planet with no sign of help on the horizon, the survivors, led by Fry (Radha Mitchell), band together to find a way back home. Among the passengers is Riddick (Vin Diesel), a convicted murderer being transported by marshal Johns (Cole Hauser) – and now freed of his chains and on the loose. But as a solar eclipse plunges the planet into total darkness, a threat even worse than Riddick reveals itself, and the last humans standing may have to form an uneasy truce with the cunning fugitive (whose eyes have been surgically altered to see in the dark) to last the long night.
Boasting crackerjack direction and a whip-smart script by David Twohy, as well as a star-making performance by Diesel, Riddick's first outing is freshly unleashed in an illuminating, brand new 4K restoration, with hours of exclusive bonus content.

Visually Intriguing, Clichéd Fun
A sci-fi/horror movie that feels like it was assembled out of various tropes and cliches, Pitch Black's strengths lie in its interesting looking sets (filmed in Australia) and some cast members doing a good job of injecting the film with personality. Vin Diesel in particular seems to be having a good time playing the role of Riddick. Unfortunately the script did feel it was letting some of the characters down at points, in particular a line towards the end seemed very out of tone. If you can handle a degree of sci-fi cheese with early 2000s angst, then Pitch Black is solid entertainment. The film was more hit than miss visually, with the colour changes during the daylight scenes still looking striking and the 4k picture holding plenty of detail (I can't compare to any Blu-ray version). The misses come with some of the digital effects standing out as lower resolution and some scenes where the grain gets a bit much. That said, the movie has aged much better than I expected and Arrow have done a fantastic job presenting the movie. My copy included a detailed booklet with plenty of background information on the film and special features. I hope all 4k releases can have one of these included in the future, they definitely add value to owning the physical product and clearly have a lot of work put in them. Great job Arrow!
