Recreating the infamous Al-Moskobiya prison, Israel’s main interrogation centre, where he was himself jailed at age 18, Andoni gathers together of fellow survivors to recreate and confront their own experiences of incarceration and torture.
A powerful hybrid of documentary, fiction and experimental art film interspersed with lyrical and beautifully rendered animated sequences, Ghost Hunting is a unique and uncompromising work. The film also gives us space to reflect on the ethics and meaning of the re-enactment unfolding before us, and to question the complicity of both the filmmaker and the viewer themselves.
“A major cinematic achievement, powerful and compelling.” Mike Leigh
“Raed Andoni and his wonderfully brave and vulnerable crew of fellow former inmates of Israel’s notorious Al-Moskobiya prison recreate the site and the choreography of their own tortures at the hands of Israel’s security apparatus, and in so doing traumatically – and beautifully - re-birth the cinema too, in all its capacity for wonder and surprise. An extraordinary accomplishment.”
James Schamus, Producer Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
“The simulation of the horror is so palpable that at times we wonder where the border between fiction and reality really is.” Cineuropa
