Arrow Films
Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, Oldboy is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre.
Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he learns of his wife's murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors...
Directed with immense flair by Park Chan-wook (JSA, The Handmaiden) as the second instalment of his Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy blazed a trail at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival where it was lauded by the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. The film went on to become a huge international smash, blowing audiences' minds with its concoction of filmmaking virtuosity, ingenious plotting, violence and pathos. Now, this masterpiece has been restored in 4K and is presented here with the feature-length documentary Old Days, and a massive array of extras.

A tale of revenge.
A story that is unique unto itself. Have you ever watched a film where a man is kept prisoner for multiple years. Not knowing why or being able to talk to anyone. Then released and given mere days to find the person that had him imprisoned. A desperate man pushed to the brink of sanity. Driven to brutality. A helluva film that looks great in 4K.

oldboy 4k standard 4k
to start off with the movie has always looked a bit rough with some iffy visual effects but is light and day better than the 2003 Tartan Blu-ray.From facial features and costuming to the intricate details of the 7.5 floor room where Oh Dae-su is held captive, there’s a terrific array of fine detail to soak in. CGI is troublesome those ants never looked good and with the added resolution and HDR grading it only draws more attention to their subpar nature. There are a handful of soft-focus shots that still look oddly parsed into the film or a few shots where image depth suffers, but overall this is a noticeable upgrade over the old Tartan Blu-ray release. right on too the audio side i went with the Korean 5.1 mix the track is great, the dialog is clear, sound effects are active and the surround channels deliver an immersive experience. it is stacked with extra features On top of four audio commentaries you get deleted scenes, a retrospective documentary, cast and crew interviews - and that’s before you get to the bonus features disc with the feature-length 2016 documentary on top of the extensive video diary of the making of the film. so with the better end of fifteen hours of bonus features to pick through. If you’re an Oldboy fan, you have your hands full with this release making a worthy addition to the collection. Highly Recommended.
