By night, Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer, Teen Wolf) dreams of Midian, a hidden subterranean world where monsters have created a haven from humanity. Under pressure from his girlfriend Lori (Anne Bobby, Born on the Fourth of July), he attends psychotherapy sessions, unaware that his shrink, Dr Decker (Videodrome director David Cronenberg), is setting him up to take the fall for a series of violent murders. Convinced he no longer belongs in the human world, Boone goes in search of Midian – not realising that the real killer has plans for both him and the colourful cast of outsiders who call it home…
The victim of studio interference and an unrepresentative marketing campaign, Nightbreed was poorly received by critics on its initial release and failed to ignite the box office, but has since undergone a radical reappraisal. Underrated horror
Clive Barkers film was originally cut by half an hour or so thanks to the powers that be who know damn all about a very good film. They didn’t like the idea the creatures were good and released it on video I remember in butchered version with a stupid ending. I bought the special edition and would only see Barkers preferred film not the video version. Nevertheless Arrow well done on another release with excellent extras but it’s a shame Barker isn’t involved in an interview only the introduction.

Gripping from start to finish
A gripping tale of outcasts versus the mainstream, that can be particularly unpleasant and evil. This film works on many levels. While not really much worse than the true Barker`s vision in the director`s cut, there are significant differences between them. In any case, David Cronenberg is brilliantly cast as the villain, not really stealing the show but almost. The director`s cut does look better though. When it comes to extras, Arrow yet again impresses by making brand new feauturettes for this release. Mind you, plenty of other older material is included as well. A full disc reserved just for the extras so you wouldn`t be disappointed.
